Delivery of the World’s Largest Type B LNG Fuel Tank

The world’s largest Type B LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) fuel tank has been successfully delivered.

Independently constructed, this Type B LNG fuel tank marks a milestone for the shipbuilding industry.

Dalian Shipbuilding Equipment Company, a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Group, achieved a world record by building a 13,000 m³ Type B LNG fuel tank—the largest single tank of its kind. This demonstrates Dalian Shipbuilding’s full capabilities in independent R&D, design, and construction of Type B tanks, greatly enhancing its global competitiveness. As the core equipment for Mediterranean Shipping’s 16,000 TEU dual-fuel container ships, each vessel is fitted with an independent Type B tank. This first tank in the series was independently designed and built by Dalian Shipbuilding, with fully independent intellectual property rights.

To ensure the successful delivery of the first tank, Dalian Shipbuilding assembled an elite, innovative technical team focused on the Type B tank. Through breakthroughs in test panel welding, simulated component fabrication, and mock-up construction, they overcame major challenges in 9Ni steel welding, precision control, and quality management—setting new industry milestones.

Delivery Testing of 3D Precision Positioning Systems

As the equipment supplier for this project, KET provided twelve 180-ton Fully Automatic 3D Adjustment Hydraulic Equipment units, undertaking block assembly and final joining of the LNG tank sections. This solution significantly reduced the shipbuilding cycle and improved overall production efficiency. The project’s success highlights KET’s outstanding ability to solve complex engineering challenges.

Featuring intelligent hydraulic control, it enables heavy-duty translation, synchronized lifting, and synchronized lowering, allowing precise adjustment in three dimensions and six directions for large-scale structures.
